SPA hosts symposium on Iraqi poet Al-Sayyab and his influence on modern Arabic literature

RIYAD – Iraqi and Saudi intellectuals discussed the achievements of Badr Shakir Al-Sayyab, the famous Iraqi poet and his pioneering role in the renewal movement of contemporary Arab literature and his experience through which he was able to further develop the Arabic poem.

The symposium, organized by the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) on the sidelines of the Riyadh International Book Fair 2021 during the monthly SPA forum and moderated by Saudi writer Dr Hessa Zaid Al-Mufrah, saw the participation of the best speakers.

Keynote speakers included Iraqi writer Dr. Ahmed Mahdi Al-Zubaidi, member of the Union of Writers and Writers in Iraq, and editor of Iraqi literature magazine, Syrian researcher and translator Dr. Mohammad Khair Al- Biqai, winner of the King Abdullah Bin Abdulaziz International Translation Prize and literary critic Dr. Hajid Demithan Al-Harbi.

Participants discussed what modern Arabic literature learned from Al-Sayyab during his years of study in Baghdad, his in-depth studies of English literature, and how he was influenced by American literature. , the world’s intellectual heritage and the use of this impact in the service of Arabs. poetry.

The audience also discussed Al-Sayyab’s suffering and emotional failure, intellectual persecution and the fight against poverty and ignorance and how he managed to get rid of the monotonous musical unity, because his poems were not linked to this specificity, which makes them more diverse. and overwhelmed by a melodious rhythm according to his psychological state.

The audience immersed themselves in the discussions on the impact of Al-Sayyab’s poetry on Arabic literature, according to the different tendencies of literary criticism, which enriched the symposium and the historical aspect of his poetry.

At the end of the session, SPA President Dr Fahad Bin Hassan Al Aqran paid tribute to the speakers, praising the diversity of programs and various cultural events included in the Riyadh International Book Fair. – SPA
