In the third quarter of 2022, the outstanding shares/units issued by investment funds Mutual funds other than money market funds stood at 14,513 billion euros, ie 342 billion euros less than in the second quarter (see graph 1). Net redemptions during this period were €94 billion, with gross issues of €1,002 billion and gross redemptions of €1,096 billion (see Chart 2). The annual growth rate of shares/units issued by investment funds other than money market funds, calculated on a transaction basis, was 0.7% in the third quarter of 2022.
In terms of type of investment fund, net redemptions of shares/units by equity funds amounted to 69 billion euros in the third quarter of 2022 (see graph 3). For bond funds, net redemptions amounted to EUR 41 billion and net redemptions of mixed funds EUR 1 billion, while net issues of real estate, hedge funds and other funds amounted to EUR 16 billion. euros.
exchange traded funds (ETFs), which constitute a separate category within the total investment funds (see appendix below), recorded net redemptions of €2 billion in the third quarter of 2022. The outstanding amount of shares/units issued by ETFs amounted to 1,195 billion euros.
Within the assets of investment funds other than money market fundsnet sales of equity amounted to 74 billion euros in the third quarter of 2022 (see Chart 4). Net sales of debt securities 46 billion euros and the net purchases of shares/shares of investment funds were 2 billion euros.
For shares/units issued by money market funds outstandings are 5 billion euros higher than in the second quarter. This increase is explained by 19 billion euros of net redemptions of shares/units and 24 billion euros of other changes (including price changes). The annual growth rate of shares/units issued by money market funds, calculated on the basis of transactions, stood at -3.3% in the third quarter of 2022.
Within the money market fund assetsthe annual growth rate of debt securities holding was -11.0% in the third quarter of 2022, with overall net sales of €48 billion, which reflected net sales of €44 billion of debt securities issued by non-residents of the zone euro and net sales of 4 billion euros of debt securities issued by euro area residents. For deposits and loans claims, the annual growth rate was 20.7% and transactions during the third quarter of 2022 amounted to 20 billion euros.
